DAF 44 and 46
The DAF 44 was launched in 1967, but the design and planning for it started as far back as 1965. It was the first of the DAF range to use the "B-body" style, as opposed to the original "A-body". The new body design was penned by the Italian designer, Michelotti. You can see the similarities with other makes that he designed for of the same era. E.g. BMW and Triumph.
It was larger than the 600/Daffodil, offering more interior space and road presence.
Like all DAFs, the 44 used the Variomatic. The main engineering change was an increase in engine size of the DAF air-cooled engine to 850cc. The 44 continued in production until 1975.
The 46 was interesting. At first glance, it looks like the 44. This was launched in 1975 after Volvo had taken full control of the car business. Using the same 850cc engine, the big changes were under the skin - it had a single drive-belt Variomatic (basically half a DAF 66 transmission) and also had the de-dion rear suspension arrangement from the 66, giving improved handling.
Both the DAF 44 and 46 were available in saloon or estate versions.
